Overview
The China R&D CTO is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving technology strategy, innovation, and end-to-end R&D execution to support bioMérieux’s growth and localization ambitions under China.
This role oversees the overall China R&D organization:
- The CTO holds direct leadership responsibility for all R&D Operations teams, encompassing the development and optimization of reagents, equipment (including software, firmware, and hardware) and systems integration. This role ensures that multidisciplinary teams work seamlessly together to deliver innovative, high-quality solutions tailored to both local and global market needs. The CTO drives operational excellence by fostering collaboration across technical domains, implementing best practices in product development, and ensuring that all components are fully integrated to support the company’s strategic objectives and the success of each franchise.
- The CTO will drive innovation, clinical affairs, regulatory affairs, and the Project Management Office (PMO) through dotted-line leadership, ensuring full integration of portfolio, project, and budget management processes in close collaboration with the China PMO Head and in alignment with bioMérieux Global R&D standards.
Governance & Representation
- Represent China R&D at the global level as a member of the Global R&D Leadership Team (RDLT).
- Participate in China governance led by the China General Manager, representing the entire R&D function.
- Serve as a permanent member of the China R&D Franchise Committee, actively participating in portfolio decision-making and execution.
- Collaborate cross-functionally at the global and local level with Marketing, Operations, Quality, GCS, Medical Affairs etc
Roles and responsibilities:
- Lead China R&D operational teams and execute the China R&D portfolio ensuring timely, quality delivery within budget from Design concept to technology transfer to operations.
- Establish and synergize the China R&D entity by integrating existing teams and leveraging available resources (buildings, laboratories, etc.).
- Integrate emerging technologies (such as automation, AI-enhancement diagnosis, advanced molecular, analytical and detection technologies) and China’s policies (tier-based healthcare systems [分级诊疗],and NMPA regulations)
- Oversee core instrument and systems localization (localization roadmap); lead R&D for China-specific solutions (infectious disease diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance, immunoassays, food and pharma quality controls, women’s health, molecular diagnostics, and others);
Ensure 100% compliance with NMPA during product development processes - Integrate sustainability targets (Ecodesign processes from early development stages) and ensure data security and cybersecurity risks mitigation
- Provide Functional Leadership to Dotted‑Line Teams.
Guide and align PMO, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Affairs, and Innovation/Scouting teams to support integrated product development.
- Contribute to technology scouting and open innovation initiatives to accelerate solution development for both China and global markets.
- Secure the IP portfolio resulting from the technology scouting or product development
- Ensure Regulatory & Clinical Readiness
Partner with regulatory and clinical teams to shape approval strategies and execute studies for the China market. - Build High‑Performing Teams & Culture
Develop R&D talent and foster an agile, collaborative, and innovative organizational culture. - Enable cross-regional knowledge transfer with global franchises.
- Ensure the continuous development of team competencies in line with strategic directions.
- Strengthen Global‑Local Collaboration
Represent China R&D in global forums and drive two‑way flow of technologies, insights, and best practices. - Represent bioMérieux in China’s IVD ecosystem (NMPA, research institutes, universities, government innovation initiatives etc.) and expand strategic partnerships via Open Innovation Centers
- Lead China IP strategy and oversee information security within R&D
- Develop and manage strategic partnerships with local and international stakeholders.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: PhD/Master’s in Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or other IVD related fields.
- Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in IVD R&D, including 5+ years in a senior CTO/R&D leadership role with a strong track record in the China market.
- Proven expertise in localized production, NMPA regulations, and multicultural team management.
- English language proficiency is mandatory (bilingual or multilingual skills are highly valued).
- Demonstrated strategic leadership, talent development, innovation, and international collaboration experience.
- Travel: Willingness to travel domestically/globally for global/regional operations and collaboration.
